Northfield Public Library

The Northfield Public Library began in 1856 with a reading room and a circulating library set up by the Lyceum Society.  From those modest beginnings it has grown to a library of 12,320  square feet and a collection of about 83,000 items.   The library is a member of  the SELCO regional library system. It  serves a population of over 31,000 in the northern portion of Rice County, Minnesota.  The library is located in the heart of downtown Northfield and plays a vital role in preserving the history of Northfield.  The local history collection includes books, atlases, plat maps, school yearbooks, scrapbooks, newspaper and census microfilm, clippings, family histories, etc. In addition to Northfield history, the collection covers surrounding areas and Rice County.
